If you’ve ever worked with vendors, or even just gone shopping, you’ve been on the buy side of the relationship. And when someone comes to you with something to sell, what’s the only question you have for that person? It’s not “How much will this cost me?” because there’s something that’s infinitely more important than price. What’s more important than price? Benefit, of course. What, specifically, is their product or service going to do for you? Why should you buy it? Can they demonstrate clearly how it benefited others, so you can see how it can do the same for you? Now switch places. In the job search, you’re the vendor, and you’ve got a product or service to sell . . . you. And now the questions are:
- What can you do for us?
- Why should I hire you?
- How will your presence on my staff contribute to my company’s success?
- What value will you add to my department?
- How will you help us to increase sales, production, profits?
- How can you help us to decrease waste, inefficiency, turnover?
You’re there to market your product (let people know you’re there) and sell your product (demonstrate all the advantages you bring) to a potential employer.
We’re here to help.
Sales and marketing are common sense. You simply have to know what to say and how to say it. And why should that be difficult? Who knows your product - you - better than you do? It’s all about knowing your product, and then presenting it in clear terms to illustrate the value you’ll bring. Knowing how to successfully sell yourself will enable you to:
- Prepare, with minimal anxiety, for a possible downsizing
- Win a new position within your current company
- Change your field or industry, or your role in a field or industry
- Become more visible in your current job, to position yourself for a raise or a promotion
- Prepare for your next performance appraisal
